Welcome to The Know, curating tech news for the rest of us. No hype, no curtains. The Supreme Court held a hearing yesterday on the so-called TikTok ban. The justices seemed fairly skeptical of TikTok's arguments regarding free speech and seemed to lean toward the Justice Department's case for national security. Justice Kagan said the law is, quote,

only targeted at this foreign corporation, which doesn't have First Amendment rights, unquote. President-elect Trump has acknowledged the national security concerns, but also stated he wants to save TikTok without providing details on how he's going to accomplish that. Rejecting the law's parameters, ByteDance has refused to divest, and the deadline is January 19th, the day before Trump's inauguration.

Also uncertain what will become of the two other ByteDance apps, Lemon8 and CapCut. We'll have to wait and see what happens next week. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, posted a video on Tuesday announcing that Facebook and Instagram will use a community notes feature instead of fact checkers.
